After winning the long-awaited Grand Slam, Rory McIlroy received praise from the biggest celebrities and athletes, PGA Tour pros, and LPGA players.
It took Rory McIlroy 11 long years to win his long-awaited Grand Slam, and what a moment it was. The last major he won was back in 2014, but since then, the professional has battled through the same fight for 11 continuous years.
But no more! McIlroy finally secured his Green Jacket at Augusta National during the Sunday Masters, and it was a showdown for the ages.
McIlroy took the lead after shooting a 6-under 66 in Round 3, taking a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau. The next round was even more dramatic. During Round 4, McIlroy tied with Justin Rose, carding 11-under par through 72 holes.
That set up a Masters playoff for the first time in eight years. The last playoff also featured Rose, who lost to Sergio Garcia.
Unfortunately for the Englishman, this story had the same ending.
Both players hit great approach shots into the first playoff hole on 18, with Rose 10 feet away but McIlroy inside two feet.
Rose pushed his birdie putt high of the hole, leaving Rory to tap in and fall to his knees, letting the emotion come over him.
What’s remarkable is that even Rose, despite losing the match, knew McIlroy’s situation and straight away went to congratulate him. “Congratulations Rory McIlroy on winning the Masters and completing the Grand Slam.
