The pilot of a small plane survived a crash in a residential neighborhood in Bayonne, N. J., Sunday morning.
The crashing Piper PA-28 aircraft took out power lines, crushed cars along the street, and eventually landed upside-down near a gas station, CBS News reported .
Miraculously, no one on the ground was hurt, and the plane’s fuel did not catch fire. The pilot sustained injuries, but was alert and talking when rescue crews arrived.
“Arriving fire companies found a small plane had crashed, turned upside down, and the pilot was trapped inside,” Chief Keith Weaver of the Bayonne Fire Department said . “Our firefighters did an outstanding job.”
The unnamed 56-year-old pilot was taken to the hospital for injuries, but is expected to survive.

It’s unclear what caused the plane crash. The pilot had radioed for help as he flew passed the Statue of Liberty, NJ.com reports .
“I think we’re very lucky — extremely lucky, considering all the houses around here,” Robert Kubert, director of public safety for Bayonne, told the New York Post.
