Taiwan in touch with US on Trump call to Xi Jinping

Good relations with Washington and Beijing important, says spokesman
Following a phone conversation between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, Taiwan said maintaining good ties with both the US and mainland China was in the island’s interests and it would continue to deepen ties with the US to avoid “accidents” in the bilateral relationship. A presidential office spokesman said Taiwan had been in close contact with the United States over the phone call between Trump and Xi on Thursday night. “Taiwan and the US both maintained close contact and communication [over the phone call] and have maintained a good ‘zero accident’ approach to it,” Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang said in a statement. He said maintaining good Taiwan-US and cross-strait relations were important goals for the government in Taipei.
