Nearly three hours after metered taxi drivers staged a protest against rival service Uber‚ traffic was slowly picking up on the R24 highway near OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng said 16 cars had been impounded after they tried to obstruct traffic.
“After 8.45 am‚ even thought it’s moving at a snail’s pace‚ our traffic is slowly recovering‚ especially in the Edenvale area‚ in both directions of the R24 freeway‚” Mokheseng said.
Earlier some motorists broke down a fence and made u-turns after being caught in traffic since 6am this morning.
OR Tambo International tweeted earlier this morning that passengers should arrive early as heavy traffic is being experienced on the R24 due to a taxi strike.
South Africans took to social media to give their take on the metered taxi strike.
