HYATTSVILLE, MD (WUSA9) – D. C.’s own Markelle Fultz could be the number one pick in the NBA draft next Thursday night in New York City, a dream for any kid playing basketball around the country. The DeMatha Catholic High graduate out of Hyattsville, Maryland, said wherever he goes, he’s going to be humble.
“I’m just happy, ” Fultz said. “I get to take care of my family which I have always wanted to do and they don’t have to worry about a lot anymore. I am doing what I love.”
Fultz could be the next big thing. The standout ball player did not even make varsity at DeMatha until his junior year. Then he had a growth spurt and all the sudden he was on everyone’s radar.
After a solid freshman year at Washington, Fultz declared for the NBA draft and experts say, he’s the best prospect out there. Boston is expected to select him next Thursday with the top choice.
“It’s crazy. Growing up, watching the draft, thinking I could be the number one pick, ” Fultz said. “And now that it’s here, it’s mind blowing.”
