The TV host (47) was travelling in a sports car on a road that was closed for the Bergrennen Hemberg race when the incident happened.
According to 20min.ch Hammond left the track when his white Rimac Concept One electric sports car caught fire.
Local police spokesman Gian Andrea Rezzoli confirmed to the website that one person was injured and brought to hospital.
Hammond was in Switzerland filming scenes for the Amazon series The Grand Tour, which he stars in along with ex-Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May, according to Swiss media.
Two anonymous sources told the website that the driver injured in the crash was Hammond.
Pictures posted online show a car smoldering after catching fire.
Co-Host Clarkson took to twitter this evening to say that Hammond seems to be “mostly OK”.
