The SSD is no longer replaceable, iFixit reveals
In fact, breaking open the Surface Pro is close to impossible, with iFixit giving it a 1 repairability score, with 10 being the easiest to repair. This means that if you’ re not a super-skilled engineer, you better not think of upgrading or repairing the Surface Pro on your own because there’s a good chance you’ re going to break it down completely.
In case you’ re wondering what makes it so tricky to fix the Surface Pro, it’s because Microsoft used lots of adhesive to hold parts in place, including even the display and the battery. Furthermore, removing the display is more difficult than you’ d expect it to be because Microsoft used non-standard connectors.
What’s important to note is that replacing any part in the Surface Pro requires the complete removal of the display, and iFixit notes that this quite a major setback because during the process you can easily damage the screen and thus pretty much destroy the device. The display is obviously the most expensive part of the Surface Pro, so you shouldn’ t try this at home by no means.
Also, it looks like Microsoft has made it impossible to upgrade storage because the SSD is no longer replaceable. This means that you should think twice before buying the Surface Pro because the amount of storage you get by default is the one you’ ll always have.
On the good side, there are USB ports on the Surface Pro, so you can always connect external storage devices for backups or multimedia content.
In the end, the Surface Pro shares many underpinnings with the Surface Pro 4, but just like any modern device, it’s impossible to repair or upgrade it.
