President Donald Trump will “self-impeach, ” according to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who added that Democrats ought to wait for special counsel Robert Mueller to finish his investigation into Russian election interference until they seek to remove him from office.
“It’s a big deal to talk about impeachment, ” Pelosi said in a closed-door meeting with Democratic colleagues, unnamed sources told Politico.
“I think he’s going to self-impeach.”
The former House speaker made the comment after Massachusetts Rep. Mike Capuano criticized Pelosi’s fellow California Rep. Brad Sherman, who has been pushing for impeachment proceedings.
Sherman sent a letter to House Democrats Monday saying he had drafted an article of impeachment for “obstruction of justice, ” though he admitted “I have no illusions. Articles of Impeachment will not pass the House in the near future. But given the risk posed to the Republic, we should move things forward as quickly as possible.”
According to CNN, Capuano said that Sherman’s efforts could be seen as a selfish ploy that would hurt the Democratic Party. The Bay State congressman added that they “have to defend their actions before the entire caucus before going alone on something so explosive.”
He reportedly added that “emotions are high. These issues have political implications and government ones, ” according to Newsweek.
Capuano suggested that they have “a discussion within the caucus—in a public forum—before we do something that would position our colleagues or our future colleagues.”
