The president and chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Orchestra has announced that she is leaving when her contract expires at the end of the year.
Allison Vulgamore said Tuesday that she didn’t make the decision “easily or lightly” but believes the timing is right.
Vulgamore, who has been with the orchestra for eight years, says the orchestra is on “significantly more solid footing, both artistically and financially” and “well positioned for positive, continuing evolution.”
She tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that the next president “will need to raise the endowment that I very much feel needs to happen for this institution.”
Board chairman Richard Worley says a search committee will be named, but interim leadership may be required depending on the timing and the availability of the next president.
