NEPHI — An 11-year-old girl died Friday after falling off a truck that was participating in the Ute Stampede Western Heritage parade.
The truck was at 240 S. Main around 5: 30 p.m. when the girl fell off the back of the truck and was hit by the trailer being pulled behind it, Nephi Police Chief Michael Morgan said.
The girl was attempting to exit the southbound truck when she “slipped and fell, ” according to Morgan. The truck was moving “at a very low rate of speed, ” he said in a statement, but “the driver was not aware of the situation and continued moving.”
“Officers and numerous citizens immediately came to the aid of the victim, ” the police chief said.
The girl, whose name was not immediately released, was taken by ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, where she later died from her injuries.
The parade trailer was carrying a demolition derby vehicle, Morgan said.
“Nephi city and Juab County offers the family and all those involved in this tragic accident our deepest sympathy and prayers, ” he said.
