Elon Musk says that the Boring Company has received ‘verbal’ approval for an underground Hyperloop that would reduce travel time between New York City and Washington, DC to just 29 minutes.
Elon Musk has tweeted that the Boring Company, an infrastructure and tunneling firm he founded last year to tackle the traffic situation in the Los Angeles area, has received verbal government approval to build an underground Hyperloop connecting New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC. Musk claims that it would only take 29 minutes to travel between New York City and DC. The network would also feature “up to a dozen or more” elevator access points in each city.
The Hyperloop, a method of ultra-fast transportation in which pressurized capsules travel through reduced-pressure tubes, is a concept that Musk released as an open-source white paper (PDF) in 2013. Hyperloop One, one of the many companies that were founded since then to commercialize the concept, completed its first full-system test run last week.
Musk admits there is a lot of work to be done before the Boring Company receives formal approval, but he is optimistic it will happen soon. Last month, the entrepreneur had “promising conversations” with LA mayor Eric Garcetti about creating a tunnel network in the city, and a few days later, he tweeted that his company had “completed the first segment of tunnel in LA”.
