ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, MI — A 24-year-old was injured when a feed truck’s boom touched a power line, shocking him and setting the truck’s cab portion ablaze.
The accident happened about 2: 10 p.m. Saturday, July 22 at 3465 56th Ave., west of Hudsonville. The location is associated with Nykamp Trucking & Excavating, address records show.
The severity of the man’s injury was not immediately known.
Ottawa County sheriff’s deputies identified the injured man as Jacob Elzinga of Hopkins.
He was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth hospital with several severe burn marks on his body.
Deputies said Elzinga appeared “conscious but dazed” prior to being taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Zeeland Township Fire Lt. Brock Bruce said Elzinga was unloading a truck and, when he adjusted the boom, it touched a power line.
The tires on the front of the truck then caught fire.
The operator then tried to put out the flames and was shocked in the process.
A nearby resident helped the injured man get away from the truck and someone called 911.
Zeeland Township firefighters arrived at the scene, but needed to wait for a Consumers Energy crew before they could fully extinguish the fire. The crew was coming from the Allegan area, Bruce said.
