A popular Japanese cosmetics manufacturer is bringing the look of 8-bit Super Mario to a set of beauty products and one accessory that will go on sale this holiday season in Japan.
Beauty products aren’t something we’re accustomed to covering here at Neowin, but when you take a cosmetics brand and mash it with Nintendo’s most iconic gaming franchise it becomes a bit more intriguing. Shu Uemura, a major company in the Japanese beauty industry, has announced that it will be releasing a set of Super Mario-themed cosmetic products that will find their way to Japanese retailers this November.
Shu Uemura is using the Mario brand for its holiday collection, which will feature five cosmetic products, including: a “dual stamp-me liner”, powder case, blush and eye-shadow palette, cleansing oil, and lipstick. All of these items can be carried around with a Mario-themed train case that will also be released alongside the cosmetic products.
The news came from an article published by WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) , where Shu Uemura’s Kakuyasu Uchiide, the international artistic director for the brand, explained that he “really want (s) to show what is our spirit, our DNA, our creativity. That’s the only way to realize what Mr. Uemura (the company’s founder) wanted to do, which was to strive to link art with cosmetics, to link art with beauty”.
Should Shu Uemura release this line internationally, it could make for a good holiday gift. Otherwise, Japanese residents and visitors can expect to pay anywhere from 2400 Yen for the Mario-themed drawing pencil to 28,000 Yen for the makeup box.
