Police say that three people were killed when a vehicle drove by a bar and shot into a crowd at a tourist hub in downtown Savannah, Ga.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Authorities say three people are dead after a suspect vehicle fleeing a nearby shooting drove into a crowd in the heart of a popular Georgia tourist district.
The shooting took place at around 12 a.m. Wednesday in City Market, a popular bar and tourist area in the heart of the historic district of Savannah.
A photographer at 11Alive’s sister station, WSAV, Darius Johnson, reported seeing a white SUV pull up at Julian and Jefferson Streets near the Tree House bar and someone inside started firing.
According to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (SCMPD) an officer who was already in the area due to Fourth of July festivities first heard gunshots at the intersection near the bar. Police arrived to find two people with relatively minor injuries and another who is in critical condition but stable.
WSAV reports that 23-year-old James Armanie-Brazelton and a 16-year-old male sustained injuries from this shooting. That added that 22-year-old April Dixon later arrived at the hospital with injuries from the shooting. The 16-year-old male was critically injured. Armanie-Brazelton and Dixon suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers then broadcast a vehicle description and soon the was spotted again. Police then pursued the suspect in a car chase that ended in a crash at the intersection of Bay and Barnard streets – still in the middle of the historic district.
The crash left one pedestrian dead and five others with injuries that officials don’t believe were life-threatening. Two people in the perpetrator’s vehicle were also killed in the crash.
One person has been taken into custody and will be charged with three counts of felony murder.
Authorities also reported a shooting less than 20 minutes after the first in the area of Jefferson and Broughton streets. One person sustained non-fatal injuries.
In a media statement, the department said Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin is reviewing reports and video connected to the holiday incidents.
