A University of Cincinnati student is in the hospital after suffering injuries in Wednesday’s Ohio State Fair accident, and she’s mourning the death of her boyfriend in the tragedy.
Keziah Lewis, 19, doesn’t remember the accident on the Fire Ball ride Wednesday night, her mother told The Columbus Dispatch. She has undergone one surgery for pelvis, ankle and rib injuries and faces a second.
Lewis also didn’t know her boyfriend, Tyler Jarrell, had died when a seat on the Fire Ball ride ripped off into the air. People flew through the air. Jarrell, 18, was found 50 feet from the ride.
“She kept asking for her boyfriend, ” Clarissa Williams said. “I had to tell her he was the one who was deceased.”
How often do accidents happen at amusement, water parks?
Lewis was among seven people injured in the accident. On Wednesday night, Ohio Gov. John Kasich ordered all state fair rides stopped for reinspection. Some rides are reopening Friday.
NEW: @OhioStateFair plans to re-open 28 kiddie rides, giant slide and sky glider this afternoon.
Both Lewis and Jarrell are from Columbus. They met while working at a McDonald’s in Grove City, the Dispatch reported.
Jarrell had enlisted with the U. S. Marines five days before his death. He was scheduled to attend basic training in Parris Island, South Carolina, next June. He hoped to serve in the infantry or as a combat engineer, the Marines Corps said in a statement.
When Jarrell wasn’t working at McDonald’s, he liked to eat there, too. A friend, Abbie Casto, remembers a particular night when they pulled into the drive-thru and instead of saying his order – a Big Mac meal and a Coke – he sang it.
“He tried doing it like opera, ” she said.
