The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is accepting applications to audition to be part of the choir. The 360-person ensemble will audition altos, sopranos, tenors and basses.
“It is a very rigorous process that yields marvelous results, ” said music director Mack Wilberg in a news release. “Each year we continue to be pleased with the high level of musical expertise displayed by choir applicants and look forward to meeting many of them during the audition process.”
Applications, including a CD voice recording and recommendation of an ecclesiastical leader, must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, Aug. 15, and are the first step in the nine-month audition process. Applicants will then be asked to complete a musical skills assessment, and those with acceptable scores will then be invited to an in-person audition and interview. Audition results are usually available by late fall, according to the news release.
Those chosen to continue will begin a 16-week training program in the Temple Square Chorale and Choir School, which includes training in music theory, sight singing and rehearsal techniques.
“At the end of the 16 weeks, there is a final choir school exam and performance by the Temple Square Chorale, ” the news release states. “Only then does the audition process started in July culminate in individuals becoming members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.”
Applicants must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in good standing, be between 25 and 55 years of age on April 30,2018, and currently live within 100 miles of the Salt Lake Tabernacle.
Additional information about the process and an application guide can be found on the choir’s website .
