It appears that Microsoft has officially given the public a first look at the upcoming Spotify app for the Xbox One. The music service has been available on PlayStation for nearly three years.
Yesterday, reports emerged claiming that a Spotify app for Xbox One is in the works, and is being tested internally. The music service has been available on PlayStation for roughly three years, so it’s about time that it makes its way to Microsoft’s gaming platform as well. Now, it appears that Microsoft itself has officially confirmed that Spotify is coming to the Xbox One in the latest episode of Major Nelson’s This Week on Xbox YouTube series.
As can be seen in the video above at the 9-minute mark, the Guide panel on the left side of the screen shows off Spotify running in the background. While Microsoft’s Larry Hryb – better known as “Major Nelson” – doesn’t acknowledge the app in the video per se, it seems like an obvious nod of confirmation to earlier reports.
The app is titled “Spotify Music – for Xbox”, but it remains to be seen whether it will publicly launch under the same name. It is important to note that the service recently made its way to the Windows Store as a converted Desktop Bridge app for PCs, rather than a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app, which means that it cannot run on the Xbox One. As such, it’ll be interesting to see if Spotify is building a UWP application from the ground up – which could potentially end up on other Windows 10 devices – or if it’s engineering a dedicated app for the Xbox One only.
