WASHINGTON – Texas U. S. Sen. Ted Cruz called on the Trump administration to investigate the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., Saturday that left one counter-protester dead and scores of others injured.
“I urge the Department of Justice to immediately investigate and prosecute today’s grotesque act of domestic terrorism, ” he wrote in one of several statements on social media. “It’s tragic and heartbreaking to see hatred and racism once again mar our great Nation with bloodshed.”
Cruz’s statements were among a flood of denunciations from Washington lawmakers, including fellow Texas U. S. Sen. John Cornyn.
“No place for the bigotry & hate-filled violence in ‪#Charlottesville. These actions should be condemned in the strongest possible terms, ” Cornyn wrote Saturday night on Twitter.
President Donald Trump also weighed in against the violence, though his call for unity on Twitter was criticized by pundits for not specifically condemning the white nationalists. Trump said “many sides” were responsible for the unrest, which also took the lives of two Virginia State troopers who crashed in a helicopter responding to the scene.
Cruz minced no words: “The Nazis, the KKK, and white supremacists are repulsive and evil, and all of us have a moral obligation to speak out against the lies, bigotry, anti-semitism, and hatred that they propagate.”
