SOUTH HAVEN, MI — The driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in South Haven Friday night told police he didn’t have time to stop before hitting the man.
Police responded to the crash around 11: 20 p.m. on Blue Star Highway south of Phoenix Street.
The victim, who police have not yet identified, was walking from Briar Hills Apartments to Walmart, South Haven Police Department Sgt. Patrick Carlotto said.
Carlotto said the victim was a 20-year-old man who had moved to the area a few weeks prior to the crash from Illinois. The man was looking in a direction opposite of the man’s car and stepped out into the road.
“He basically walked out in front of him abruptly, ” Carlotto said.
Carlotto said the area has minimal lighting, and the crash did not occur at a crosswalk. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 52-year-old Vicksburg man, has not been charged. Carlotto said the crash remains under review. Meanwhile, the driver voluntarily submitted to a blood draw and gave police his cell phone to review for distracted driving. Carlotto said the man did not appear to be intoxicated and did not indicate that he was looking at his phone.
The crash remains under investigation.
