Sen. Lindsey Graham Lindsey Graham Graham: Trump’s Charlottesville rhetoric ‘dividing Americans, not healing them’ OPINION: Congress should censure Trump for his unfit conduct Supporting ‘Dreamers’ is our civic and moral duty MORE (R-S. C.) said President Trump should “fix” his remarks about white supremacists and last week’s violence in Charlottesville in a response to the president’s Twitter attack on him earlier Thursday morning.
Graham said Trump is receiving praise “from some of the most racist and hate-filled individuals and groups in our country” after his remarks stating that both sides were to blame for the violence.
White supremacist leaders David Duke and Richard Spencer both lauded Trump’s remarks.
“For the sake of our Nation — as our President — please fix this. History is watching us all, ” he concluded.
Graham’s statement comes after Trump issued a bitter attack on Graham via Twitter, in response to Graham’s previous statement on Wednesday saying the president had drawn a “moral equivalency” between white supremacists who attended the weekend rally and groups who protested them.
Heather Heyer is the 32-year-old woman killed when a man pictured at the white supremacist events allegedly drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Her memorial service was held on Wednesday.
Graham on Thursday said he only aims “to move our nation, my state, and our party forward — toward the light — not back to the darkness, ” and went on to praise the president for his “nice and appropriate tweet” on Wednesday honoring Heyer.
