CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers placed designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with an irregular heartbeat.
He spent 12 days on the DL in June with a similar ailment.
Martinez played in both games this weekend against the White Sox, so it’s not clear what prompted the heart problems. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus will speak to the media later this morning.
To replace Martinez on the 25-man roster, the Tigers recalled outfielder JaCoby Jones.
Jones was optioned to Triple-A Toledo before Saturday’s game, so he has been gone only one day.
Because Jones is replacing an injured player, he does not have to spend the required 10 days on optional assignment.
Martinez, 39, is in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his career, hitting just .255 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 107 games. He has an OPS of.697 and WAR of -0.5, according to Baseball Reference.
He is under contract through 2018 and is slated to make $18 million next year. His contract and sub-par performance has made him untradable, even as the Tigers look to get younger and shed payroll.
