Many Companies Have Poor Information Governance

Many companies report inadequate information governance strategies and IG training programs, and data is often lost due to staff negligence or bad practices.
Information governance is inadequate at the majority of companies, and more than one-third do not offer IG training, said a new survey. Furthermore, data lost due to staff negligence or bad practices plague companies, many of which cannot find records that are required for litigation. The study, “Governance and Compliance in 2017: A Real World View, ” was conducted by AIIM, a not-for-profit organization for information professionals. The findings come at a time when regulations are getting stricter, requiring more adherence to regulatory, legal and industry operating guidelines to protect corporate and customer information. “Organizations in all industries must come to realize the importance of ensuring that their data assets are managed and shared in a sensible and secure manner, ” the report states. Lack of IG training “is most likely the reason there is data loss due to staff negligence and bad practices, ” said Bob Larrivee, chief analyst for AIIM. ” The survey was conducted with a web-based tool that collected responses from 218 individual members of the AIIM community in June 2017. Respondents represented organizations of all sizes and from various regions: North America, Western Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Middle East, Africa and South Africa, and Asia.
