North Korea successfully tested a staged thermonuclear device Sunday. The North intends to mount a thermonuclear warhead on its new Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile, which can range targets across the continental U. S. North Korea claimed last January that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb, but experts were skeptical. U. S. intelligence suggests that this time around, North Korea did in fact test an advanced nuclear device. (RELATED: North Korea Tests H-Bomb For New ICBM)
North Korea revealed images of the warhead only a few hours before the test.
South Korea conducted a live-fire drill Monday in which the military launched Hyunmoo surface-to-surface missiles, as well as long-range air-to-ground missiles fired from F-15K fighter jets, into the East Sea, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Such displays of force are common in the wake of North Korean provocations.
After North Korea’s first and second ICBM test, the U. S. and South Korea conducted joint military exercises, during which a variety of missiles were fired into the sea. The allies held joint military drills after the North fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, dropping bombs near the Korean border.
The allies face a difficult challenge as North Korea has dramatically escalated the threat to its neighbors and the U. S.
