St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson plans to hold a town hall with the group of demonstrators that has engaged in violent protests throughout the city.
St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson plans to hold a town hall Tuesday with the group of demonstrators that has engaged in violent protests throughout the city over the last four days.
The protests center on the Friday acquittal of former Officer Jason Stockley, who shot and killed Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. St. Louis has been embroiled in protests in the four days since the verdict, with demonstrations remaining peaceful throughout the day, only for violence to break out at sunset. Krewson has agreed to move forward with a town hall scheduled for Tuesday night, according to Reuters.
Krewson had previously scheduled a series of town halls throughout September, but many feared she would cancel the one scheduled for Tuesday due to unrest throughout the city. Protesters plan to “show up and hold Mayor Lyda Krewson accountable” for the not-guilty verdict, according to the Resist — STL Facebook page.
Krewson published a statement on Twitter Tuesday thanking city police for handling the protests and calling for an end to the nightly violence.
Police made 123 arrests Sunday night alone when demonstrators transformed into rioters at sunset. Monday night resulted in broken windows and other damaged property for downtown business owners.
Krewson will appear for the town hall between 6 and 8 p.m. at a local high school.
