He opened the door to a police officer. The officer told him his daughter, Samantha Malohn, and his granchildren were dead. So was her boyfriend, Rodney Pollitt Jr., 26.
They were killed Thursday in a head-on crash in the 11000 block of Staffordsburg Road in Independence.
“They were good kids and good parents,” Cooper said.
Pollitt and Malohn were together 11 years and lived down the street from Cooper for four years. Their three children, Hailieann Pollitt, 9, Brenden Pollitt, 8, and Cailie Pollitt, 6, all died in the crash.
Malohn was a stay-at-home mom who cared for their oldest daughter, Haileen, who had Down syndrome.
“Those kids were her life,” Cooper said.
Pollitt worked as a bus driver for Kidz Club, a daycare in Erlanger.
Pollitt was like part of the family, Cooper said.
“From 1 o’clock until now, we were pretty shook up,” Cooper said. “I think it hasn’t set in yet.”
Malohn has five siblings.
Police in a press release said a 2014 Honda Pilot driven by Daniel Greis, 57, of Independence, went left of center on Staffordburg Road when it struck the 1993 Honda Accord driven by Rodney Pollitt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Kenton County Police.
Greis was transported by helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. His condition was unavailable.
Rodney Pollitt worked as a bus driver for local daycare Kidz Club in Erlanger. A woman who answered the phone Friday morning at Kidz Club said they wouldn’t comment per the family’s request.
“We’ve been in contact with police all morning trying to confirm names,” Howe said. “We are hearing our children are involved.”
“It’s a tough day.”

INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) – Three children and two adults died in a head-on crash in Northern Kentucky on Thursday, according to the Kenton County Coroner.
The two-car collision happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 11000 block of Straffordsburg Road. Police said five people were in one car and a single driver in the other vehicle.
The victims have not been identified and their relationship to each other is unknown.
Kenton County Police Chief Spike Jones said a sixth person was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center in unknown condition.
“In 29 years of police work, you do see serious accidents,” Jones said. “This would certainly be one of them.”
Investigators shut down Straffordsburg Road, Kentucky 536, for several hours Thursday night. The two-lane road is heavily traveled as a connector between Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties, Jones said.
The cause remains under investigation and few details have been released.
“As facts develop, I hope I’ll have more to offer,” Jones said.
