Nvidia is tipped to launch a beefed-up version of the GTX 1070 to compete with AMD’s Vega 56. Here’s what the rumours say about the 1070 Ti including its release date, price and specs.
The GTX 1070 is over a year old now and it seems that Nvidia is about to announce a faster Ti version at the end of October rather than wait until it launches the next-gen Volta cards.
Whether or not this interim card is specifically to compete with AMD’s recent Vega 56 is pure speculation, but the rumour mill is now running at full tilt.
According to various sources, including Wccftech, these are the highlights:
Nvidia superfans will already know that this brings the core count of the 1070 Ti close to the GTX 1080, which has 2560 CUDA cores.
And the base clock speed of 1607MHz is the same as the 1080, though the boost speed is the same as the 1070.
If the rumours are true, the new card will have GDDR5 memory instead of GDDR5X – as with the GTX 1080 – and will reportedly have a bandwidth of 8Gb/s, 3Gb/s slower than the 1080.
Some reports reckon it will be around US$70 (around £50) less than the GTX 1080, which means that stock versions might start at £430 or slightly more.
The Vega 56 – the cheapest versions at any rate – currently cost around £460, so the 1070 Ti appears to be priced to undercut it.
It’s expected that the card will launch at the end of October and – as spotted by Hexus – Gigabyte has posted a Halloween-style image on its Facebook feed with the letters ‘TI’ and a caption “Ti will get you too… eventually… #comingsoon”
The slightly confusing image also has a wallet with a bank note being lifted by a balloon and the caption “YOU’LL FLOAT TOO”. This is a line from Stephen King’s IT, but quite what it means in relation to a graphics card is anyone’s guess.
Nvidia may choose to announce the card at its GTC (GPU Technology Conference) on 10-12 October with an on-sale date of 31 October, which could be the reason behind Gigabyte’s image.
We’ll have to wait and see, but with GTC only a few days away, there’s not long to go.
