Sheykhet attended the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania as a physical therapist student.
Her brother, Artem, told WPXI that he found out about her death on his 25th birthday.
According to Artem, his parents went to pick up Sheykhet from her home but her roommates told them she was still asleep. When she didn’t answer her bedroom door, their father kicked the door in and found her on the floor.
A neighbor told CBS News that no one in the area heard or saw anything suspicious going on at the house.
“I feel so bad because I saw a guy and a lady, they were crying so loud … I think (they were) the mother and the father,” Nancy D’andrea said.
Another neighbor told the outlet that the home had been rented out last month, but they didn’t know much about the people living there.
Police said they are following leads, but it’s too early to determine a suspect. The department did not return Daily News request for comment.
“At this point, we are actively interviewing people in the area and canvassing the area looking for further information,” police Sgt. William Vollberg told CBS.
The University of Pittsburgh released a statement saying the campus was “saddened and extends its deepest sympathies to the student’s family and those who knew her.”
