Despite her mom being a music icon.
To Tracee Ellis Ross, growing up as the daughter of a music icon didn’t seem too out of the ordinary.
“She never left us for more than a week,” Ross told Modern Luxury of her mother Diana Ross. “If she was gone, we were in constant contact with her over the phone.”
The “I’m Coming Out” singer purposely worked on her music after hours.
“When she was home, she would record after we had gone to sleep,” recalled the “Blackish” star, who has three siblings (Her brother Evan is married to Ashlee Simpson).
That said, there were certain moments when Tracee, now 44, knew her mom was a star.
“I was very aware of the fact that my mom’s job was extraordinary,” the Golden Globe winner said. “When you leave your mom’s work and people are banging on your car, or she’s standing onstage in a stadium filled with hundreds of thousands of people, it’s pretty clear.”
By constantly being among children of the elite in their respective industries, Ross was unfazed by the spotlight.
“I went to school with Ralph Lauren’s and Robert Redford’s kids — people whose parents are part of the fabric of American culture,” she said of her time at Manhattan’s Dalton School. “So, as kids, that was taken off the table, and we got to be children.”
Ross plays wife of Anthony Anderson on their hit ABC show, but is staying mum on her off-screen love life.
“To a certain extent, if you put that stuff out there, then people get to comment,” she said. “Romantic relationships are challenging enough without other people having opinions about them.”
