During the OnePlus 5T launch event in New York City, the company shed some more light on its Android 8.0 Oreo update plans. For owners of the OnePlus 5, the company will begin the Oreo beta program later this month. OnePlus 5T owners, on the other hand, will need to wait until next month for the Oreo open beta, as the handset’s software is said to be “more complicated”. The bad news, however, is that the final Oreo OTA update will begin rolling out for the OnePlus 5 only by early 2018. While no specific timeframe was confirmed for the OnePlus 5T, we expect it to receive the update around the same time as the OnePlus 5.
It is no doubt disappointing that OnePlus is going to ship the OnePlus 5T with the older Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system out of the box. Having to wait until early 2018 for the final Oreo update only makes it worse. While there is no doubt that OnePlus flagships do pack solid hardware, the company needs to work on improving software support for its devices. A few Android OEMs like Sony and HTC have already started rolling out Oreo for their flagship devices, while others such as HMD Global are on track to deliver the update before the end of the year.
Since the OnePlus 3 and 3T Oreo beta program is already underway, OnePlus expects to roll out the final Android 8.0 Oreo OTA update for the two smartphones a few weeks after it begins the Oreo beta program for the OnePlus 5T. While no specific timeframe has been confirmed, it is likely that the OnePlus 3 and 3T owners will need to wait until January 2018 to receive the Android 8.0 update. As confirmed by the company earlier this year, Android 8.0 will be the last major update that the OnePlus 3 and 3T will receive.
