President Trump on Tuesday sat between two empty seats and commented on his canceled meeting with two high-profile Democrats.
President Trump on Tuesday afternoon sat between two empty seats and commented on his canceled meeting with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“They should be calling immediately and say, ‘we wanna see you,’ but probably they won’t because nothing to them is important other than raising taxes,” Trump noted .
Pelosi and Schumer withdrew their participation after being slammed by Trump on Twitter.
“Meeting with ‘Chuck and Nancy’ today about keeping government open and working,” the president tweeted in the morning. “Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes. I don’t see a deal!”
Pelosi and Schumer soon after said in a statement, “Given that the president doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead.”
“If the President, who already said earlier this year that ‘our country needs a good shutdown,’ isn’t interested in addressing the difficult year end agenda, we’ll work with those Republicans who are, as we did in April,” they further noted .
Politico reports that for a time in September, it appeared Trump, Pelosi, and Schumer had come to a consensus, which included security for Dreamers and no funding for the U. S.-Mexico border wall.
Soon after, the White House said that was not the case.
