Study: Chicago home to most MLB players, Philadelphia No. 2

Chicago is the top hometown for Major League Baseball players, according to a study.
Nov. 21 (UPI) — Chicago is the top hometown for Major League Baseball players, according to a study.
The analysis was performed by OnlineGambling.ca. Analysts found that 371 players call Chicago their hometown, while 354 call Philadelphia home. St. Louis was third on the list with 294 players, followed by New York City (253), Brooklyn (237), Los Angeles (232), Cincinnati (199), San Francisco (174), Baltimore (165), Cleveland (135), Pittsburgh (128), Houston (122), Detroit (117), San Diego (117), Washington, D. C. (100), Boston (94), Oakland (90), Dallas (84), Sacramento (83) and Louisville (79).
In 2017,259 players or 30 percent, were born outside of the United States.
The South is the leader in having the most MLB players for a region, with 0.53 MLB players per 10,000 residents, according to the study. The Midwest is second with 0.46 players, followed by the East (0.43) and the West (0.30).
Washington, D. C. is the leading state for MLB players, bringing up 1.47 athletes per 10,000 residents. Pennsylvania ranks second on that list, followed by Missouri, Massachusetts, Ohio, Illinois, Rhode Island, Kansas, Iowa and Mississippi.
This year’s MVP’s, Jose Altuve and Giancarlo Staton, hail from Venezuela and Panorama City, Calif., respectively.
American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber was born in Birmingham, Ala., while National League winner Max Scherzer is from St. Louis. National League Rookie of the Year Cody Bellinger was born in Scottsdale, Ariz. American League Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge is from Linden, Calif.
