Two highly-anticipated Detroit stores for women are opening on Small Business Saturday
Saturday is Small Business Saturday, a day to celebrate — and shop — small businesses.
Which makes the openings of two highly anticipated Detroit stores extra timely.
The Peacock Room — which sells dresses and accessories with a vintage flair — is scheduled to open a flagship store in the Fisher Building. Its sister store, Yama, which is to sell modernistic clothing for women, is also scheduled to open in the Fisher Buildling.
Both stores are owned by Rachel Lutz, who opened the first Peacock Room, a favorite with women throughout the area, in Detroit’s Park Shelton in 2011. She followed it up with Frida — which sells clothing with a bohemian edge as well as accessories — in 2014.
The Fisher Building Peacock Room will be almost three times larger than the Park Shelton.
The Fisher Building is at 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. Store info: facebook.com/peacockroom or facebook.com/yamadetroit or 313-559-5500.
Here are some more Detroit favorites that are worth a stop:
Mama Coo’s Boutique carries a little bit of this (vintage clothing and retro home accessories) and a little of that (hand-beaded jewelry and colorful wallets and bags) — plus some cool bilingual (English-Spanish) board books for kids and Detroit-centric souvenirs you won’t find in every shop in town. Located in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, 1701 Trumbull, Detroit. For more info: mamacoosboutique.com or 313-404-2543.
Savvy Chic is an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of Detroit’s Eastern Market. Full of gift items — candles, cards, fancy foods, linens — and some pretty and unstructured clothing for women. There’s menswear, too. This place, which celebrates the good life without being pretentious, is a true gem. 2712 Riopelle, Detroit. Info: savvychictrends.com or 313-833-8769.
Well Done Goods is full of Detroit-centric merchandise, including some that honors our place as the techno capital or the world. The store is clever and witty and full of locally made jewelry, planters, neckties, soap and generally fun stuff. 1440 Gratiot, Detroit. Info: welldonegoods.com or 313-404-2053.
City Bird has one of the best collections of Detroit and Michigan merchandise around — shirts, hats, candles, jewelry, books — but don’t miss the absolutely fabulous collection of greeting cards. Lots by local or regional makers. Plus, 20% off Detroit-themed products on Small Business Saturday. 460 W. Canfield, Detroit. Info: citybirddetroit.com or 313-831-9146.
Happy shopping.
