Months after competing streaming devices started supporting 4K HDR content, Apple launched the Apple TV 4K. As the name suggests, the Apple TV 4K supports 4K video resolution as well as HDR content (compatible with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision). However, there was a huge problem with the streaming box where it would force even non-HDR content to be displayed as HDR, which would make the video look worse. With the new software update, Apple has fixed this problem.
The tvOS 11.2 update, which was released for the Apple TV 4K (as well as older Apple TV models) yesterday, has fixed the HDR problem. It no longer forces users to watch non-HDR videos in HDR. The Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate settings can be accessed by navigating to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content on the Apple TV 4K. These settings are turned off by default, but you should turn them on.
Moreover, navigate to Settings > Video and Audio > Format and choose the 4K SDR format so that menus, games, and other stuff is displayed in standard dynamic range while continuing to display HDR videos in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. This would be a perfect setup for those who care about video quality such as nerds like us, and it can finally match the likes of the Nvidia Shield TV in HDR video playback. You can now watch HDR videos without any hassle through apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.
Even though the Apple TV 4K looks and feels exactly similar to last year’s model, it is quite different from the inside. It uses a more powerful A10X Fusion chipset, which has three high-performance Hurricane CPU cores and three power-efficient Zephyr CPU cores along with the 12-core PowerVR GPU. There’s 3GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage space where you can store media files and install apps as well as games. The chipset allows the Apple TV 4K to stream and playback 4K HDR videos (HDR10 and Dolby Vision) at a maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second.
Connectivity-wise, the Apple TV 4K features dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.0, HDMI 2.0, and a gigabit Ethernet port. The streaming box can be remotely controlled using the Siri Remote, which uses Bluetooth 4.0 and an IR transmitter. It features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and can be charged using its Lightning port. The 32GB variant of the Apple TV 4K retails for Rs. 15,900, while the 64GB variant is priced at Rs. 17,900. It was announced alongside the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X.
