California wildfire victim returns to destroyed home

«It’s a process. It’s still a shock, still trying to understand.»
Around 190,000 people have been evacuated due to wildfires in southern California, some with nothing but their pets and a few mementos. Some tried to go home Friday, only to find devastation and their belongings destroyed.
«A lifetime, a couple of lifetimes. Like I said, they’re 84,83, my mom and dad. They’ve been living here 30 years, built it themselves,» said victim David Karian as he dug through the rubble that was once his parents’ home.
Thousands of firefighters have taken on the massive task of containing and extinguishing the flames over hundreds of thousands of acres.
«There’s not much, but if there’s a few things, that help them make some connection to the past, that’s what I’m trying to do,» Karian added. «That’s what it is, material stuff, but like you said, memories of a lot of years. And we’ll see where it goes from there. I don’t know what they’re going to do.»
