James Brown was charged with possession of a weapon, shooting or throwing a deadly missile into a building or vehicle and destroying evidence.
FORT PIERCE — While searching for a shooter in Fort Pierce, police found and arrested a man with a stolen gun, according to his arrest affidavit.
James Brown, 26, of the 1200 block of Avenue H, was charged with possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, shooting or throwing a deadly missile into a building or vehicle and destroying, tampering or fabricating evidence.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at about 6:30 p.m. Monday near the area of 13th Street and Avenue H, according to the report. A car on North 13th Street was shot twice.
While searching the area, police didn’t find evidence, witnesses or surveillance footage, according to the report. They moved down a block in hopes of speaking to a potential suspect.
Police found Brown sleeping in his car on the 1200 block of Avenue H. After Brown woke up, police removed a gun they found near him in the car, according to the report.
When police researched the serial number on the gun, it matched that of a gun that was reported stolen in late April from a Melbourne resident, police said.
Because he was convicted of tampering with evidence in 2011 and resisting arrest with violence in 2010, both felonies, Brown was arrested, according to the report.
Brown was being held at the St. Lucie County Jail on Tuesday afternoon with $118,750 bail.
