JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Florida high school student who had been missing for nearly a week was found safe Friday in New York, authorities say.
The 17-year-old girl was believed to be with Rian Rodriguez, a 27-year-old soccer coach at Fort White High School in Lake City, Fla., police said.
The Gainesville Sun reported that the girl and Rian Rodriguez were stopped by a New York State Police officer Friday afternoon in Syracuse. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida says the girl, who had been missing since Saturday, was detained, and Rodriguez was taken into custody.
Law enforcement officials had been tracking Rodriguez through an ATM withdrawal in St. Mary’s, Ga., and by surveillance cameras at convenience stores in South Carolina and North Carolina.
Rodriguez had not been arrested or charged late Friday, according to New York state police.
Officials at Fort White High School have suspended Rodriguez. It wasn’t immediately clear what criminal charges he would face.
