“He will not be on hand…”
On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) announced through his office that he had been hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The statement indicated that McCain was undergoing routine treatment for his cancer, and the initial hope was that he would return to the Senate floor for the final vote on the upcoming tax bill, which is expected before Christmas.
But on Sunday, CBS News reported:
Republican Sen. John McCain is returning to Arizona after spending several days in a Maryland hospital recovering from side effects from chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer, CBS News has learned.
McCain left Washington Sunday and is heading back to his home state to spend the holidays with his family. He will not be on hand for the final vote on the GOP tax passage expected for early this week. It is unclear when McCain might return to Washington.

The senator’s daughter, Meghan McCain, confirmed the news via Twitter on Sunday:
Thank you to everyone for their kind words. My father is doing well and we are all looking forward to spending Christmas together in Arizona. If you’re feeling charitable this Christmas @HeadfortheCure or @NBTStweets to help find a cure for brain cancer is what I recommend. ❤️

CNN added to the report, noting that it was a good sign that he was well enough to travel and that, according to sources, the senator was “exhausted, but OK.”
