A strong earthquake hit off the southern coast of Indonesia’s Java Island just before midnight Friday, forcing the country’s Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics issued a tsunami warning.
The tsunami warning was later lifted at 2.27am (3.27am HKT) after no tsunami was reported.
The US Geological Survey said the quake of magnitude 6.5 was focused only 0.3 kilometre southwest of the Cipatujah area in West Java Province, very near to the land, a 91km under the seabed.
The quake struck at 11.47pm (12.47am HKT) only about 350 kilometres southeast of Jakarta.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that a 62-year-old man was killed in West Java’s Ciamis Regency and five others injured in some areas in West and Central Java after their houses collapsed.

People living in some flats in Jakarta ran into panic or were asked to evacuate when the quake also shook the capital.
The temblor, however, was strongly felt mostly in the areas along the southern coast of the provinces of West Java, Yogyakarta and East Java.
In a statement, the Indonesian meteorological agency called on local authorities along the southern coast of Java to “stay alert” and “urge people to immediately evacuate.”
Some damages have been reported from some cities in the southern parts of the island, according to Sutopo.
Indonesia is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur.
