Adm. Bill McRaven, chancellor of the University of Texas System, has announced he will retire at the end of the academic year.
McRaven informed the system’s board of regents of his decision Friday afternoon, saying it was for health reasons, the Austin American-Statesman reported .
The retired four-star Navy admiral, who as leader of the nation’s most elite and secretive fighting force led the raid resulting in the death of Osama bin Laden, revealed he’d been dealing with leukemia during a commencement speech at Dallas’ UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2015.
He wouldn’t say when asked in June whether he would stay on once his three-year contract expired at year’s end.
“I want to see the direction that the board is going,” the American-Statesman quoted McRaven as saying at the time. “The fact of the matter is I think there are some things we have to talk about. I’ve got to find out whether or not the board wants me to stay… If I’m not adding value to the University of Texas System, then maybe I’m not the right guy for the job.”
The Dallas Morning News editorial board named McRaven its 2011 Texan of the Year .
