Multiple people were reportedly killed.
Multiple people are reported dead and injured after an Amtrak train derailed Monday in DuPont, Washington. The train reportedly derailed as it was passing over a highway overpass, sending at least one train car hurtling down to the highway below.
The Amtrak train, No. 501, was heading south with a total of 78 passengers and five crew members aboard the train, reports CNN. The train struck several cars on the interstate below, but no fatalities were reported among the motorists, said the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. Local authorities did not confirm the number of killed or injured.
The cause of the derailment is not yet clear.
He followed up with a Tweet offering his “thoughts and prayers” to those involved.
