Winthrop University’s December commencement ceremony will be Saturday.
More than 300 Winthrop University students will cross the stage Saturday to accept their degrees.
Winthrop’s December commencement ceremony is 11 a.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.
English professor John Bird, Winthrop’s 2017 Distinguished Professor, will deliver a speech on the “Words of Wisdom-Rarely Found in Commencement Speeches,” a release states. Bird said he did not get to attend his own undergraduate ceremony at Appalachian State University.
President Dan Mahony will lead the event, which will award 75 graduate degree candidates with their master’s or specialist degrees and more than 250 undergraduates with their degrees.
Mahony will present Cheryl Fortner-Wood, a psychology professor, with the 2017 James Pinckney Kinard and Lee Wicker Kinard Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award annually recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated their dedication to teaching.
Fortner-Wood came to Winthrop in 1988. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses and leads the university’s McNair Scholars Program, which just received a grant renewal for five years.
The graduation ceremony will be live streamed on YouTube on Winthrop University’s homepage under Commencement Information.
