David Cage has responded to claims of homophobia, racism and workplace mistreatment against Quantic Dream, pointing to his collaboration with Ellen Page on Beyond: Two Souls as an example of why the allegations are incorrect.
Quantic Dream has been accused of fostering an extremely unhealthy work environment by three separate reports, with French publications Le Monde, Canard PC and Mediapart alleging that the Detroit: Become Human game development company sees its employees circulating offensive photoshopped images.
According to Eurogamer, these images « present Quantic Dream’s collaborators in sexual positions, adorned with homophobic or sexist slurs, or even made up to look like Nazis. » Canard PC’s report features a header image containing a selection of these photos.
Cage and fellow Quantic Dream leader Guillaume de Fondaumière were also accused of inappropriate behavior, overworking staff and being complicit in the offensive antics of their staff. Both Cage and de Fondaumière have claimed that they had not seen any of the more inflammatory images circulated by their employees.
Cage called the allegations made against Quantic Dream « ridiculous, absurd and grotesque. »
« You want to talk about homophobia? » he said. « I work with Ellen Page, who fights for LGBT rights. You want to talk about racism? I work with Jesse Williams, who fights for civil rights in the USA… Judge me by my work. »
Ellen Page starred in the 2013 game Beyond: Two Souls, which was developed by Quantic Dream. The game became embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that a nude character model of Page was included in its files, which was inevitably uncovered by its players and posted online.
