LG Display has announced its largest and highest-resolution OLED panel yet, measuring 88-inches diagonally and boasting a whopping 7680 x 4320 (8K) resolution. The new 88-inch 8K OLED panel offers 16 times higher resolution than Full HD (1920 x 1080) and four times higher than 4K UHD (3840 x 2160). The previous largest OLED panel measured 77-inches diagonally but offered “only” 3840 x 2160 4K resolution.
The higher resolution is achieved by reducing the size of each pixel and in turn aperture ratio, which leads to a reduction in brightness. Since OLEDs are self-emissive, LG Display has achieved the 8K resolution without any impact on brightness. And since there is no need for backlight units with OLED panels, the 88-inch LG panel allows for a slimmer design compared to LCD panels with 8K resolution. As LCD panels require backlight units, they get heavier and thicker due to the requirement of backlight units being placed directly behind the panel to achieve similar brightness and picture quality as 4K LCD panels.
LG Display will be showcasing the 88-inch 8K OLED panel at its booth in the North Hall Meeting Room of the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2018 next week. While we don’t expect LG to begin selling an 88-inch 8K OLED TV in the near future, it does reiterate LG Display’s dominance in the OLED TV market. Even other OLED TV vendors such as Sony, Panasonic, and Philips source OLED panels for their televisions from LG Display.
