LG Display has announced that it will be giving the attendees at CES next week a glimpse of the world’s first 88-inch 8K OLED display. The company hasn’t yet announced its price or other details.
CES 2018 begins next week, and the folks at LG Display have announced that attendees will be able to get a glimpse of the world’s first 88-inch 8K OLED display at the show floor – that’s 7680 x 4320, or 33,177,600 pixels.
There have been larger 8K displays – going as high as 145-inch – but none using the OLED technology. LG is breaking its own record with this display, as the previously largest OLED display was a 76.7-inch 4K LG TV that is still available for purchase at a cool price of $19,999.99.
It’s not yet known what it would cost to own one of these new 88-inch 8K displays, but the price of that 76.7-inch display should be enough to get an idea.
As for content, there isn’t much available as of yet; while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 became the first movie to be shot with an 8K camera; an 8K version of the film is not yet available. Vimeo began supporting 8K content with HDR support in November last year, but that’s still a very limited selection.
4K displays are only expected to become more affordable, and with 4K content becoming a somewhat familiar sight, the format is bound to become mainstream sooner rather than later. 8K will certainly follow that, but one can only hope that its rise will begin before the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, which is expected to broadcast in 8K.
