As we head closer to the Mobile World Congress 2018, more leaks regarding Samsung’s upcoming flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones continue to surface online. A new report from South Korea has shed some light on the camera hardware of the two smartphones, confirming some of the previously rumored info.
As previous leaks had suggested, only the Galaxy S9+ will come with a dual-camera setup at the rear. The Galaxy S9 will feature a single 12-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, paired with a variable aperture (f/1.5 – f/2.4) lens. While the Galaxy S9 will be company’s first flagship smartphone to come with a variable aperture lens, Samsung already offers a variable aperture lens on the W2018, a China-exclusive high-end clamshell smartphone announced in November last year. Thanks to the variable aperture lens, users will be able to adjust the aperture before taking a photo. The bright f/1.5 aperture lens should also allow the Galaxy S9 to deliver significantly improved low-light performance compared to the Galaxy S8 as well as the Galaxy Note 8. Currently, the LG V30 and Huawei’s Mate 10 family of flagship smartphones boast the widest aperture on a smartphone camera: f/1.6.
The Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, is going to feature a dual-camera setup with two 12-megapixel sensors. While the primary sensor is going to be paired with an f/1.5 aperture lens, the secondary sensor will be paired with an f/2.4 aperture lens. Users will be able to capture a photo using both sensors simultaneously, resulting in a superior image quality compared to previous Galaxy flagships. In the video department, both Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to be capable of shooting ‘super slow motion’ videos, perhaps with a frame rate of 960 fps. For selfie lovers, both smartphones will offer an 8-megapixel resolution front-facing camera with autofocus as well as iris recognition.
As confirmed by Samsung at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 earlier this month, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be officially announced at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next month. The Galaxy S9 is expected to feature a 5.77-inch Quad HD+ dual-curved Super AMOLED display while the Galaxy S9+ will come with a bigger 6.22-inch Quad HD+ dual-curved Super AMOLED display.
