Suspense is building as Samsung fans await the unveiling of the brand’s latest flagship, Galaxy S9 next month; leaked images suggest new camera sensors will allow for Full HD resolution at 480 fps and a “Super Slow-mo” feature.
For the moment, it’s only Sony Xperia XZ Premium that boasts an advanced Slow Mo feature with 1000fps. Even the iPhone X tops at 1080p at 240fps. Will Samsung bring something better to the market?
The internet continues to speculate and piece together potential clues as to what to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy S9. Images of what looks like the company’s flagship retail box have been posted to Reddit and reports say that the work environment and gloves seen in the picture, holding the box, suggest this could be a legitimate photo. The plot thickens as some of the specs on the box do seem to match up with a link on the Samsung website, explaining its latest image sensor technology, which was then quickly removed, although the URL is still available.
So what is the conclusion given from these various clues? Well, the potential retail box says “Super Speed Dual Pixel” next to it “12-megapixel Dual Pixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization and support for variable aperture” and just below it says “Super Slow-mo”. The Samsung website describes its new ISOCELL camera sensor providing “faster AF with dual-PD and super PD.”
Samsung also talks about a 3-stack fast readout sensor that allows for high-speed captures at Full HD video. It’s the fast-read-out sensor made up of three layers that enables it to be faster as well as support a more precise focus. Sammobile dives further into these specs to suggest that “if the sensor is capable of recording 1080p Full HD at 480 frames per second then it should ideally be able to record 720p video at 960 frames per second. This will make the Galaxy S9 one of the very few handsets on the market capable of recording super slow-mo video.” This would be a big step up from the Galaxy S8 camera that takes Full HD videos at 60 frames per second.
We will just have to wait until February 25, for the unveiling of Samsung’s flagship smartphone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, to find out what is really in the box.
