HONG KONG • Police in Hong Kong yesterday said they were investigating a bus accident that left 19 people dead and scores more injured, with the bus driver arrested for dangerous driving.
The double-decker bus overturned last Saturday evening near the town of Tai Po in the northern New Territories, flipping onto its side and smashing into lampposts and a bus stop, ripping open the front of the bus’ top section. The bus had been taking passengers from Sha Tin Racecourse to Tai Po.
A total of 65 people were injured, some critically, according to local police. Most of the injured and some of the dead were on the upper deck of the bus.
“The 30-year-old male bus driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death, and dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. He is still being detained for further inquiries,” police said in a statement early yesterday, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
The bus belonged to Kowloon Motor Bus Company (KMB), which said it would cooperate fully with government and police investigations into the crash.
The firm said the driver was involved in a careless driving incident in 2014 in which one passenger was injured, the online edition of South China Morning Post (SCMP) said.
The driver was suspected of being over the speed limit as he went down a slope and lost control, senior traffic superintendent Lee Chi Wai told reporters.
