Less than an hour before a tremor shook Taiwan, a 3.9-magnitude (Intensity 4) quake struck Quezon province on Tuesday night.
Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed that the earthquake hit southwest of San Francisco town in Quezon around 11:01 p.m. or around 49 minutes ahead of the earthquake in Taiwan. There is no time difference between Taiwan and Philippines.
The quake in Quezon was of tectonic origin and had a depth of 3 kilometers, Phivolcs said, and did not cause damage to any property. Phivolcs added that the earthquake in the province would not result to aftershocks.
At 11:50 p.m. also on Tuesday, Taiwan’s east coast experienced a 6.4-magnitude tremor, killing at least two hotel employees and injuring over 200 people, according to officials.
The United States Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck northeast of Hualien with a depth of 9.5 kilometers. Faye Orellana, INQUIRER.net /kga
