High school students from greater Washington DC staged a die-in at the White House on Monday to protest politicians’ inaction on gun violence — another sign that young people are fed up with school shootings and want the government to act.
In groups of 17, the students laid down on the road near the White House for three minutes at a time — roughly the length of time it took Nikolas Cruz, 19, to fatally shoot 14 students and three staffers at a Broward County HS in Florida.
Protesters carried signs reading “Protect Kids, Not Guns” and “How about our children’s rights?” while one read the names of the 17 victims Cruz killed with a semi-automatic AR 15 assault rifle, ABC News reported .
Students also appeared on “Meet the Press” and other news shows Sunday to call for an organized march in an effort to hold lawmakers accountable.
“How many more students are going to have to die and have their blood spilled in American classrooms, trying to make the world a better place just because politicians refuse to take action? That’s my question,” surviving student David Hogg told the program.
Thousands of other students massed in Fort Lauderdale Saturday to mourn those who were killed and to call for restricted access to firearms, including student Emma Gonzales.
“The people in the government who are voted into power are lying to us. And us kids seem to be the only ones who notice and our parents to call ‘BS.,’ We are prepared to call ‘BS,’” she said.
