David Vincent Akins Jr., a 38-year-old from Plantersville, was arrested in 2016 after his former landlord alerted authorities that he found child pornography on Akins’ computer, reports The Courier. Law enforcement discovered that the videos and photos on the computer depicted Akins raping the baby in 2013.
He was found guilty of first-degree felony aggravated assault of a child, and last week a Montgomery County judge sentenced him to spend the rest of his life in prison without parole.
Five other former child victims came forward during the punishment phase of Akins’ trial, including his own sisters.
“Akins went to juvenile detention when he was 14 years old for raping his 5-year-old sister,” Mary Nan Huffman, chief of the Internet Crimes Against Children Division in the district attorney’s office, told the Courier. ” And when that happened, his other sister came forward with sexual assault allegations stating he had raped her since she was 3 years old. Both sisters testified during this trial, which was very powerful.”
Huffman said Akins was manipulative and carefully chose his victims. She said he sought out single mothers with young children after he was released from juvenile detention, according to the Courier.
Before he was led out of the courtroom, Akins thanked the judge for giving him a fair trial and apologized to the court and jury members for having to watch the sexual assault video that was submitted as evidence in the case.
